My name is Hannah Crump. I am from Powhatan, Virginia—a small town outside of Richmond. I am currently a first year at UVA, hoping to major in Economics or Accounting. I love spending time with family and friends! Journeying to the Downtown Mall in Charlottesville for a movie or Carytown in Richmond for the BEST cupcakes, are some examples!
I completed Spanish 4 my junior year of high school; it has been a while since I have spoken Spanish. I chose to take Spanish over the other languages offered at the University of Virginia because I believe it is more common in the United States. I believe speaking Spanish would allow me to communicate with more people both in my future career plans and my day-to-day life. In business, speaking Spanish will allow me to expand the population I work with. Outside of the workforce, I could help Spanish-speaking individuals with tasks such as transitioning into an English-speaking school or finding the food they want in the grocery store. I believe that speaking Spanish would increase my ability to help others.
I will contribute to a positive learning environment by staying on task with my work. I will do the work outside of class to prepare for the class. I will try my best! I will be patient with other classmates and ask for help when I need it. My primary goal through this course is to be able to accurately communicate in Spanish. Although I took Spanish 4 in high school, I still struggle to communicate. My family and I vacationed to Mexico last Christmas. I was able to understand most of what the workers were saying; however, I had a hard time responding. I was better on paper, but I think it is more useful to be proficient verbally.
Going into this course, I believe that my biggest strength is in conjugation (although I will definitely need to refresh my memory). I am decent with vocabulary and some culture, but I am looking forward to exploring them. I’ve never been in a Spanish class that spoke no English at all. While I am looking forward to this environment, I am nervous. I’m scared that if I do not know what to say, I will not speak up. Throughout this course, I will try to overcome my weakness-- speaking up even if I do not know for sure that I am right. I will be vulnerable and allow my classmates to learn from my mistakes. I will help my classmates through their struggles and I hope that my classmates will help me.
As I visualize myself at the end of the semester, I see someone who can communicate in Spanish. Someone who is not hesitant, but instead confident with Spanish. I do not think this course is going to be easy. Spanish was not my strong suit in high school; however, I think that if I put in the effort I will get to the place I want to be. My greatest accomplishment will be speaking in Spanish, but throughout the semester I will advance my skills as I create an ePorfolio.
“On my honor as a student, I have neither given nor received aid on this assignment.”
